2 Parts Workshop - 3 hours each

This workshop is focused on looking at gendered and powerless language and the impact it has on our interpretations. As a field comprised primarily of women, we need to be aware of the language we use in our interpretations, not only for clarity but being mindful of the impact and implications it has on the individuals we work with and the messages we are facilitating. Join me to gain a deeper understanding of inclusing and powerful language and how we can apply new tools to our daily work and interactions.

EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR K-12 EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETERS

3-hour Workshop

This workshop is designed specifically for ASL interpreters working in K-12 educational settings. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their role within the educational team, learn how to navigate ethical challenges, and develop strategies for supporting diverse learners. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, attendees will explore how to maintain professional boundaries, collaborate effectively with teachers and staff, and adapt their interpreting strategies to meet the varied needs of students. The workshop aims to equip interpreters with the tools and knowledge necessary to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

MENTORING WITH PRIDE: EMPOWERING LGBTQIA+ INTERPRETERS IN ASL

3-hour Workshop

In this workshop, we will explore how to integrate LGBTQIA+ inclusivity into the mentoring process within the ASL interpreting field. Many mentors come from backgrounds that may not fully understand or appreciate the diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community. This workshop is designed to bridge that gap by providing participants with the tools and knowledge to create more inclusive, affirming, and effective mentoring relationships. We'll discuss the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in the interpreting community and how mentors can actively support their growth and development in a way that honors their identity and experiences.

UNDERSTANDING AND ADDRESSING AUDISM IN INTERPRETING AND DEAF COMMUNITIES

3-hour Workshop

This workshop is designed to provide interpreters and members of the Deaf community with a comprehensive understanding of Audism—prejudice and discrimination against Deaf individuals based on their Deafness. Participants will explore the historical and cultural roots of Audism, its manifestations in interpreting practices and Deaf interactions, and strategies for creating more inclusive and equitable environments. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and personal testimonies, attendees will gain practical tools to recognize, challenge, and combat Audism in their professional and personal lives.

NIKKI CHERRY

(they/them)

Nikki Cherry (they/them) is a nationally certified, Arkansas licensed ASL interpreter living in NW Arkansas. They work as a freelance contractor and own Specialized Interpreting Services (SIS), prioritizing providing opportunities for historically marginalized folks in any and all settings. Nikki is currently the Vice President for the AR Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (ARID). Nikki primarily works with Deaf Professionals in research and science/healthcare settings; they have been a Designated Interpreter for the past 10 years. They enjoy conference interpreting and as part of their agency offerings provide conference coordinating services. Nikki has been a mentor for students and novice interpreters for over 15 years, and looks forward each semester to meeting new people entering and progressing in our profession. They primarily focus on BIPOC individuals and members of the LGBTQIA+ community to help them feel welcome and encouraged to work in all desired settings.
